Kingston-upon-Thames

As Kingston known, Kingston upon Thames is a southwest London area, England, 10 miles (16.1 km) southwest of Charing Cross. Identified as a metropolitan centre in the London Plan, it is the administrative centre of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Cyninges tun in AD 838, Chingestune in 1086, Kingeston in 1164, Kyngeston super Tamisiam in 1321 and Kingestowne upon Thames in 1589 were how Kingston was called. Several kings of the tenth-century in Kingston were crowned, in 925 thelstan, Eadred in 946 and in 978 thelred probably because of the symbolic location.

Kingston Polytechnic transformation into Kingston University, its growth and development has made Kingston a university town. A river bank that is lined fronting the Hampton Court Park expanse is across Kingston Bridge. Including Kingston Readers' Festival, Think-in-Kingston and the Festival of the Voice, annual festivals are organised by the Council and Kingston Arts Council. Opened at The Grey Horse Pub in 2002, home to Crack Comedy Club is Kingston.

Kingston, Norbiton and Hampton Wick are railway stations that from London Waterloo station on this line serve the town. Near Kingston Hospital, Norbiton is to the centre's east, and to the west across Kingston Bridge is Hampton Wick. One of the arterial roads to be built in Britain was the "Kingston bypass road". Location of Kingston University and Kingston College is Kingston.

A military aircraft manufacturing centre was Kingston for much of the 20th century - first with Sopwith, H G Hawker Engineering, and eventually British Aerospace. A charter by King John in 1200 was granted by Kingston, but the oldest one to survive is from 1208 and this document is housed in the archives. A museum, modern Crown Court and smaller court, public library, and by the Hogsmill River's mouth that is part-culverted, the Guildhall, which houses magistrates' court and Kingston Council include Kingston's civic buildings.

With lively frontage of bars and restaurants, River Thames is Kingston's main open space. The Surrey Comet that is weekly paid-for, which in 2004 celebrated its 150th year, and the Kingston Guardian that is free, are the newspapers. Many designers and artists at the university have studied including John Bratby, Fiona Banner, Jasper Morrison and David Nash and both Jeremy Moon and John Hoyland worked in Kingston from studios that are permanent.

In Canbury Gardens, next to the river, on the Spring Bank Holiday, Kingston Green Fair was held from 1987 to 2008. Although there has been a church in Kingston since at least 838, the All Saints church that is 12th century serves the Kingston Church of England parish which lies in the Southwark Diocese. On the outskirts of the town is Kingston Rugby Club, and on the River Thames is Kingston Rowing Club.
